Why You Should Like Crises

Sometimes the world comes crashing down. We’ve all known the triggers of major crises. Physical illness, relationship difficulties, stress, or depression. These things occasionally pay a visit. Sometimes all of them at once. But they have a reason for coming. They’re not setbacks. They’re not here to hurt. They are great opportunities to pause your life and think for a while how you got here and where are you going. A crisis is a lesson.

Implicit Priorities

In the course of a busy life, it’s easy to forget where you want to go in life and what are you living for. You are taking small steps automatically and stop seeing the whole picture. I’m talking big priorities here, all the way to “What does happiness mean to me?”

All our actions in life are connected to our goals and priorities. When our goals are clearly and explicitly defined, they set the direction for our actions and we strive towards our visions.

But when you’re uncertain about your priorities or pay lip service to them, it will be the other way around. Your actions will implicitly define and alter your priorities. You may suddenly find yourself heading in a direction you don’t like and didn’t plan for.

You Run The Show

A crisis is here to remind you that it’s you who’s in charge of your life. It may force you to face a painful decision. It may have to make you see that you stand on a crossroad in the first place. It may hold you in a corner until you take a firm decision and stop whining about the inevitable sacrifices.

Your dreams and goals will be challenged. Your belief in those dreams and goals will be challenged. Your heart may conflict with your reason. You will be forced to ask yourself what you really want and what are you doing to get it.

Every crisis must be viewed as a chance to examine your priorities, implicit or explicit. So, the next time you hit the wall, ask yourself if you’ve been going in the right direction.
